A Biography of Stephen Hawking, an English Physicist

Stephen Hawking was born in January of 1942 in Oxford, England. He grew

up near London and was educated at Oxford, that he received his BA in 1962,

and Cambridge, where he received his doctorate in theoretical physics. Stephen

Hawking is a brilliant and highly successful researcher, and, since 1979, he has

held the Lucasian professorship in mathematics at Cambridge, the chair once

held by Isaac Newton. Although still comparatively young, Hawking has already been being

compared to such wonderful intellects as Newton and Albert Einstein. But it should

be noted that since the first 1960s he features been the victim of a bad progressive and

incurable motorneurone disease, ALS, that today confines him to a wheelchair.

This affliction prevents Hawking from browsing, posting, or calculating in a

direct and simple way. The majority of his work, involving learning, publishing,

lecturing, and worldwide travel, is continued by making use of colleagues,

friends, and his wife. Of his condition, Hawking has explained that it has enhanced

his career giving him the freedom
